Copyediting for book publishers and packagers
Copyediting is my core task as a freelance editor. I frequently work as a project editor or copyeditor, liaising with in-house editorial staff on the development of a title from manuscript stage until handover to production.
At manuscript stage, I usually work closely with the author, keeping an eye on the overall structure of the book and flatplan, restructuring text if necessary, resolving queries, marking up text for design, keying in illustrations and compiling style sheets.
At the page layout stage, I usually resolve any issues concerning the text, cutting and filling, perhaps writing chapter intros and captions, making sure that the text works cogently with any images on the page, and addressing comments and requested amendments from the in-house editorial and design team.
I usually work in Word for manuscript editing and InDesign for page layouts, although some of my clients still use Quark XPress.
I am also familiar with marking up manuscripts with coding for e-book conversion.
